Sister Act is splashing onto the Athens’ stage July 21st, with its refreshingly witty repartee and its musical score boasting of funky, Philly, fun 70’s soul.
Based on the award-winning 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, Sister Act the musical follows the same fun-loving story line. When Deloris Van Cartier (Jade L. Jones witnesses a murder, the police put her in protective custody in the one place they know she won’t be found—in a convent disguised as a nun. Immediately, Deloris clashes with the tightly-wound Mother Superior and the rigid lifestyle. Using her fierce voice and disco dancin’, Deloris (now Sister Mary Clarence) wins over the hearts of the other sisters and resurrects the parish with song—blowing her cover in the process. Before too long, armed gangsters are in pursuit and all hell breaks loose!
Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Little Shop of Horrors, and an almost countless number of popular film and stage musicals) and lyricist Glenn Slater (Broadway scores for School of Rock, The Little Mermaid, and numerous other popular shows) broke away from the jukebox-musical format, though, and brilliantly moved the setting to 1970’s Philadelphia. The new catchy music ranging from funk, Motown, and soul to disco anthems and glamourous gospel is a perfect replacement for the original film’s oldie parodies.
“Menken evokes the lush, funky sound of Philly soul without falling into mere pastiche: ‘When I Find My Baby’ starts off like bedroom R&B before the lyrics take a hilarious turn. ‘Take Me to Heaven’ and ‘Spread the Love Around’ bloom into full-throttle disco epics, the latter building up to an ecstatic finale” (New York Post).
Sister Act is the divine musical that will raise the Athens’ roof and have audiences rejoicing!
